Chapter 13: Confidence building

Adapted into web novel format on Dec. 14, 2011 at 3:27 PM MST
Portal 2 spoilers ahead.

Gumi placed the core on the ground as she bent down to pick up her goggles. Just then, she and the core heard someone singing nearby. Mio, who was trying to regain her composure that was lost with the new arrivals, performed a few lines of a song she helped write with her bandmates.

What will happen to us tomorrow? No one knows
But we always, sing "Oh yeah, take it easy"

"Oh. Hello, angel!" greeted the core. Mio turned around and saw Gumi holding the core outward in her hands. Gumi was wearing her goggles once more.
The core continued, "Guess I must have died and gone to heaven. Name's Rick." Like the corrupted Space Core, Rick, as he called himself, had been thrown into the present day and found a human to take along. However, it seemed that Rick himself did not make the choice for his human partner.
Judging by his first impression, Rick was a nice change from someone who would always bring up an embarrassing incident, namely, that jerk Soldier. Despite him being a personality core and not a human per se, Mio felt that Rick could help her.
Rick continued his speech. "So, you out having yourself a little adventure? I don't want to scare you, but I'm an Adventure Sphere, designed for danger."
Mio gently picked up Rick from Gumi's hands. "Sorry," she said quickly. Gumi didn't mind. She took a quick bow toward Mio, then winked at her before she walked off.
"Doesn't bother me," said Rick. "Gotta say, the... view's mighty nice from right here." Mio looked briefly to her right in a bit of uncertainty. Rick then continued, "Situation's looking pretty ugly, for such a beautiful woman. If you don't mind me saying; you are beautiful."
Mio smiled. "Thank you," she said.
"Always time to compliment a pretty lady. All right, back to work. Let's do this."
Just then, Mio and Rick heard a gruff voice in the distance behind them.
    "Attack!"
BLAM! Soldier had fired a rocket directly into the ground and propelled himself up into the sky; he had performed another rocket-jump.
Mio turned Rick toward the distant Soldier while she herself looked over. "What, are you fighting that guy?" Rick asked Mio. "You got that under control there? 'Cause, uh..."
But Mio had tucked her head in. She mumbled, "I've never felt so bad--"
"Here, stand behind me," said Rick. Mio placed Rick on the ground and quickly stepped behind him. "Yeah, just like that. Just like you're doing. I'll do what I can to cover you."
    BLAM!
"Booyah!" Soldier cheered in the middle of another rocket-jump.
Sniper said sarcastically, "Rocket around like a bloody idiot!" Even he seemed to disapprove of Soldier's actions.
A clip of Danny played briefly on the inhibitor viewscreen. Danny turned away in his chair with a long "Sh****t!"

"So, do you have a cool line? You know, prepared?" asked Rick.
Mio looked upward and placed her finger on her chin. She mumbled to herself in thought, "Shuuuu, doro doro doro..."
Rick was also thinking. "Ok, let's see... Cool line. He's... big, he's..." He then asked Mio, "You think there might be nine more of this guy somewhere?"
"No, no!!!" Mio screamed and quickly picked up Rick once more. She panicked at the thought of multiple Soldiers marching down a hill with, from what she heard, their rocket launchers, shotguns, shovels, and pickaxes, especially if they all wanted to harass a poor helpless bassist like her. After all, Mio already suffered a traumatic incident at a performance a few years ago, and that one jerk Soldier just had to remind her of that embarrassing event when he found her.
"All right, you know what? It's gonna be best if you can get him to say something first," Rick declared.
    Kshzzzt!
The inhibitor signals scrambled, but continued to show Mio and Rick at the city. However, Mio felt a little... different.
"Here's the plan," Rick continued. "Why don't you put me down and I'll make a distraction."
Mio placed Rick back on the ground. Suddenly, she gasped and moaned as she shook her head and caught her breath. She then said, "No, I wasn't thinking of it like that." However, once again, Mio spoke in a voice that wasn't really hers.
"All right, you create a distraction then," Rick offered, "and I'll distract him from your distraction. Then tell your pretty ears to stand back, because I am going to zing him into space."
Mio hummed a happy brief hum as she raised her head. With Rick in front of her, she was now confident and ready to take on her aggressor for the past six months: that one jerk Soldier.
From the inhibitors, Sniper cheered, "Give 'im a gob full!"
