Prologue
- "Nine mercenaries have been selected for a job. It's the turn of a decade a lot like the one we are going through. A dark time."
- The bold-text introduction running throughout the prologue is based on a paragraph from the Meet the Team page on the official Team Fortress 2 website, before its redesign in June 2010.
- The introduction hints at superslinger2007 (persona)'s physical death and its effect on the mental inhibitors, and GLaDOS's first transferal to her humanoid body on March 17, 2009. The events will be covered in WTPF? 7: terminal distortion - part 2, a project to be finished in the distant future as the grand finale of the overall superslinger2007 series.
- Sniper has a campsite in the background of a Team Fortress 2 map named "Thunder Mountain". It is in the third stage and can be seen at the second checkpoint (third dot).
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Jul 24 2010
- "This man was Sniper, otherwise known as Mr. Mundy, one of the first to discover a case file."
-Sniper's last name is given in the TF2 comic "Meet the Director", released in May 2011.
-He first discovered the case file for himself in supplemental video "signal 01.", released on March 9, 2010 "for a reason".
- Soldier is introduced in the infamous TF2 deathmatch-map known as "Mario Kart". The particular version shown is likely the first released version.
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Jul 24 2010
- "Another man [Soldier] [...] ran in front of an infamous billboard depicting four teenage girls dancing."
-The giant animated billboard in the map features part of the opening to a series named Lucky Star. The four characters on the billboard have been featured in superslinger2007 mashups since 2008, and have also appeared in the CODE RED series.
- "He was Soldier, who oddly called himself "Mr. Jane Doe" and was another mercenary who discovered the case file. "
-Soldier's known alias was given in his segment in the "WAR!" Comic", released in December 2009.
-Discovery of file depicted in CODE RED Mar 17 2010.
- "He was Medic, a mercenary who had discovered the case file at the same time as Soldier."
-Depicted in CODE RED Mar 17 2010.
- "A hulking man, wearing a custom-bullet bandolier"
-In "Meet the Heavy", a Team Fortress 2 trailer first released in May 2007, Heavy claims that his minigun "fires custom-tooled cartridges at 10,000 rounds per minute". It is assumed that he wears a bandolier of such bullets around his chest.
- "[Heavy] had affectionately named his minigun "Sasha", and would most often be seen with "her"."
Also shown in "Meet the Heavy": Heavy calls his minigun "Sasha".
- "Heavy, too, had discovered the case file, but had not been as accepting of its circumstances."
-Depicted in CODE RED Jun 22 2010, where Heavy shouted, "What sick man put camera here?!" Covered later in chapter 17. - "it is rumoured that a symbol on a small Digivolution-related monster's forehead was the basis for the inhibitors' design."
-Jack (superslinger2007 the user) liked to draw Calumon's symbol repeatedly in the early 2000s, and was attached to it so much, it eventually became a part of the mental inhibitors' design.
-The symbol is generally believed to be named the "Crystal Matrix", and glows on Calumon's head when there is a Digivolution in the third Digimon series.
-Calumon himself will appear in One Step Beyond: YTP ss07 11. If not for a drive wipe in February 2013, he would have been accompanied by Chiyo, as both characters share the same Japanese voice actress. Chiyo appeared as a VCAS'd in WTPF? 4, 5, and 6, and spent the entirety of WTPF? 7 part 1 trapped in a hollow Companion Cube. A Chiyo cosplayer was featured in part 5 of Payback: the Otafest vlogs - the 4th split day.
- " "As part of a required test protocol," she began, "seek passive signature imprint." She cleared her throat. kAhemkk. "Get to the control point!" she then yelled in a commanding demeanor that seemed too human for her computerized voice."
-GLaDOS has the same voice actress as the Combine Overwatch in Half-Life 2 and its Episodes, and the Administrator in Team Fortress 2. - "[GLaDOS] then looked over to her right, and winked."
-GLaDOS winked because she had a major connection with Miku herself: their human bodies were frighteningly similar.
- "nearly four months ago, superslinger2007 took over her hardware, and she was again exiled into the humanoid body."
-Depicted in CODE RED Aug 31 2010.
- "However, there is one more secret. One that was traced back to the year of the renegade's first mental collisions."
"It was while superslinger2007 was still learning how to spell Haruhi's name!"
-One of the #SK09 videos was released on October 25, 2007, before the events of WTPF? 6 occurred on Nov. 9. More details to follow.
- "This person was Pyro, and although their gender is unknown to the other mercenaries, this mercenary has been referred to as a "he", and was known to practice both masculine and feminine poses from time to time."
-Examples include Pyro's "humiliation" pose upon defeat (feminine) and, later, "Director's vision" taunt and high-five animations (both gender styles).
- "However, he had not reacted too negatively upon his discovery of the case file."
-Depicted in CODE RED Jul 12 2010: Pyro groaned but then burst into laughter.
- "He was Demoman, otherwise known as Tavish DeGroot, a self-proclaimed "black Scottish cyclops" who drank rather heavily on the battlefield."
-Demoman's name was given in his segment in the "WAR!" Comic", in which, on his day off, he acts more reasonable than he would if he was drunk.
-His self-description was given in "Meet the Demoman".
-One of the Engineer domination lines (added in July 2010) toward a Demoman is "Drunk on the battlefield ain't no way to be, son."
- "He barely remembered the context of the case file when he discovered it"
-Depicted in CODE RED Jul 24 2010.
- "but he took things the wrong way nearly four months ago when he tried to convince a particular someone to do his "Kaboom" taunt."
-Depicted in CODE RED Aug 31 2010: Demoman tried to make someone to the taunt, only for that someone to place their hands over their crotch to shield it twice. More details in chapter 17.
- " "Play ball!" [Scout] proclaimed as the train caught up behind him. Luckily, he was faster."
-An allusion to "Meet the Scout" showing that Scout was quite a daredevil.
- "a double-jumping team-player"
-"Team-player" in this sense means that even though Scout plays along with teammates and helps them in combat, he also likes to toy with them while off-duty... for example, during the missions.
- "who had discovered the case file at the same time as Demoman... and laughed at its risky circumstances."
-Depicted in CODE RED Jul 24 2010.
- "For the past year, however, Scout had been unable to control his paranoid fear, often loudly muttering "better safe than sorry" to himself."
-This occurred in episodes such as the February 2010 "update" and CODE RED Mar 17 2010.
-Scout shares the same voice actor with a church-guy in Left 4 Dead.
- "[Spy] stood beside the table where, nearly seven months ago, he shocked Scout with three pictures that led to a user's revelation."
-Depicted in supplemental video "That would be superslinger!", released in June 2010 and built up to the user's Revelation. It is an edited version of events in "Meet the Spy" featuring the CODE RED mercs according to their affiliations as shown in "The Team Colors".
-It showed three pictures hinting at Jack's identity COMPROMISE circumstances in May 2010, which led to the creation of the now ill-fated Payback: the Otafest vlogs.
- "Gentlemen?" is a popular Spy line and is sorted under "battle-cry" in TF2 gameplay. More info in chapter 16.
- "He then crouched, positioned his arms above his head in a crab-like pose, and began to walk out of the room while crouched."
-Spy performs the "Spycrab" walk.
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Oct 31 2010 (walk), CODE RED Aug 31 2010 (taunt)
- "He was Spy, a mysterious rogue with an ongoing rivalry against Sniper."
-As demonstrated in TF2's Sniper vs. Spy Update in May 2009.
- "However, the missions he was selected for required him to avoid harming anyone, except for a few invading cyberbullies he backstabbed time and time again."
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Mar 17 2010
- "Strange events nearly four months ago led to Spy's discovery of the case file and his overt amusement of its circumstances."
-Depicted in CODE RED Aug 31 2010.
- "Upward, outside BLU base. [...] carrying the toolbox on his shoulder."
-Meant to emulate a teaser screenshot for the TF2 map "Upward" given shortly before the Engineer Update in July 2010. - "[Engineer] was swinging his trusty wrench onto a Dispense-o-Matic 9000 Provisions Dispenser as it assembled itself."
-The Dispenser's long name is given in the Sentry Operating Manual (PDF), which itself is given as the Team Fortress 2 manual in the Steam program menu.
-Engineer's wrench can repair, not damage, buildings he works on. - "He was Engineer, otherwise known as Dell Conagher"
-Engineer's name was given in the comic "Loose Canon". However, Engineer is affiliated with BLU in the comic. - "tasked to maintenance of the mental inhibitors before the missions began. However, time spent developing his Frontier Justice shotgun pulled him away from maintenance, resulting in events that led up to this final mission."
-However, Engineer was absent in CODE RED May 21 2010, coincidentally before the Mac Update trailer (released June 10, 2010) which featured his Frontier Justice shotgun.
-In Engineer's absences throughout the series, the other mercs struck the inhibitor with their own weapons, not knowing this had a side effect of internal damage. - "Dispenser, I am coming for you, again!"
-Heavy, among others, liked to refer to the mental inhibitors as "dispensers" due to their visual similarity, and the fact that such Dispenser calls are (and remain) popular in-game.
-Heavy had punched inhibitors in previous episodes. - "[Sniper] saw a strange rectangular touchscreen instrument with a triangular grip"
-Sniper finds an instrument that Miku owned on the stage where she hid throughout the series. The instrument appeared in a music video for a song sung by her; more details in the epilogue.
Chapter 1: Phrases and missiles
- " "Oh my god... Pillowy mounds of mashed potatoes." "
-A Tourettes Guy episode released in December 2010 featured a lot of mashed potatoes. This invoked a popular scene from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. - " "I feel it would be prudent to restrict surveillance access to this interview," Alyx spoke"
-Alyx Vance's voice actress played Kristen Smith in 24 season 8. - " "I'm afraid we have a problem," Judith replied. "I just heard that the alert condition has changed. I'm assuming that he will avoid the facts and present the rumour." "
-Judith Mossman's voice actress played Lynne Kresge in 24 season 2.
-Mossman's statement closely follows the #SK09 case file situation; she is afraid that superslinger2007 (persona) would let the case file videos go public without providing details regarding their creation. - "Heavy heard a homeless man on the inhibitor, but there was no video signal. Nevertheless, Heavy recalled what happened with Pyro a week earlier."
-Depicted in CODE RED Dec 25 2010: In the video intelligence that Pyro found, Chester A. Bum convinced several cosplayers to act out the film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. More details in chapter 9. - "On the inhibitor screen was a man in a red mask who had green eyes and wore boxing gloves. He was riding in a hot air balloon modeled after his likeness."
-Strong Bad's balloon was featured in Homestar Runner's main page #8. - "Spy was watching the balloon from the Construct grounds below."
-GM_Construct is a standard map provided with Garry's Mod.
-In July 2012, GM_Construct was remodeled for the GMod 13 Beta released in late October 2012. However, CODE RED's finale is set on Jan. 2, 2011, so this is long before then. - " "Three years ago-- three years ago--three years since--" "
" "Three years ago--three years ago from the current time in this plane." "
" "Three years ago--Three years ago. That's when something very interesting happened." "
-The other #SK09 video was released on the Internet on January 2, 2008, three years before the finale/written adaptation's setting of Jan. 2, 2011. - "Vrrak-BANG! The unbelievable sight to behold had manifested again. A missile that looked suspiciously like a green onion turned around in midair and rocketed from the twin green end, off into the distance."
-Green onion missiles were actually Shizuku-gumi's idea from the #SK09 videos. More details in chapter 17.
-The missiles were mistakenly depicted as being propelled from the singular white end in CODE RED Aug 31 2010, and was retconned in CODE RED Oct 25 2010 so that the missiles could be propelled from either end with different speeds. - "She spun around once and tried to take off her headband in a flourish"
-Ritsu mimicked Mario's victory pose from games such as New Super Mario Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Brawl as she tried to take off her headband as she did in CODE RED Aug 31 2010.
-Mario's pose was also shown in part 5 of Payback: the Otafest vlogs - the 4th split day. - "A blonde-haired blue-eyed girl put some pink taffy-on-sticks into her mouth... with a hearty "Nom" that wasn't hers."
-A common joke is to overlay Heavy's "nom" over someone else taking a bite into food.
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Oct 25 2010 - " "I am on this RED team! This BLU team is trying my patience--!" "
-Team scrambles occur in Team Fortress 2 for balance. There were more RED members than BLU, and Medic's visual alias wears a dark blue suit, forcing Medic to switch to BLU for the missions.
Chapter 2: Coming into the fray
- "a blue-haired lazy-eyed girl gave a thumbs-up and winked from a distance."
-An event in chapter 17 shows Konata's connection with Miku besides being an all-out fan of anime and similar items. - "The blue-haired girl was none other than Konata, who was branded an "SOS supporter" on March 17, 2009 by Haruhi herself due to her loyalty."
-Depicted in WTPF? 7: terminal distortion part 1: Haruhi personally gives Konata a red armband which reads, in Japanese, "SOS Brigade supporter".
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Oct 25 2010 (armband)
-Haruhi and Konata share the same voice actresses in both Japanese and English. - " "Of course we do! I picked them out myself," Haruhi replied. She then grabbed the orange-haired girl who was shown in a previous clip, causing the screen to be blocked with "Risky fanservice shot censored"."
-This scene also occurred in the mashup "Not in the 7th, part 2", released on July 7, 2009 "for a reason".
-The fanservice shot being censored was a direct closeup of Mikuru's chest, from the second Endless Eight episode of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. - "The inhibitor played an old testimony by superslinger2007, previously recovered on March 17, 2010. "As soon as she pulls a 180 and takes off, the camera just dips low like that." "
-This is exactly what happens to cause a blatant view in the first risky #SK09 video. - "Text appeared: "Clue detected ---^", pointing straight to a blonde-haired female cosplayer in the background with white hair clips."
-Pyro found out the very character the cosplayer went as; that character appeared in the extended retcon ending for CODE RED Dec 25 2010 and later (as a cosplay character) in Payback: the Otafest vlogs. - "One of them, a man, went in front of the camera and said, "We just like to keep photos of blank walls." [...] The mental inhibitor pulled up a clip featuring the very man that cosplayer was dressed up as. He lamented, "That may be... However, what other choice might we have had?""
-That cosplayer featured in the Bum Reviews episode for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 went as Xemnas from Kingdom Hearts II. - " "Now they're alleging that the subject has a part-spy outfit," [superslinger2007] spoke in a synthetic voice. "I highly doubt it." "
In November 2010, a Los Angeles Times article about Miku describes her as having a "part-schoolgirl, part-spy outfit". - ""It can't be like this!" an angry but polite young girl screamed. [...] Sniper fired a warning shot just above the young girl's head."
-Sniper may be aware of another character who overemphasizes the Japanese 'word' "desu" too much, and becomes quickly annoyed by Azusa's speech. Luckily, Sniper is an excellent marksman, but he was told not to harm anybody. - "The girl dropped into a panicked duck-and-cover crouch."
-The official K-On! DTA set has a desktop mascot program featuring the five main band members. Azusa throws her arms in a duck-and-cover position when she is clicked, but she remains standing.
Chapter 3: Songs, alterations, similarities
- "The line played was "Caught in a bad romance", but the inhibitor screen misinterpreted the line after that as "Wha jumpeh romance"."
-A song named "Just Dance" was already criticized implicitly in "Not in the 7th" (part 1) for having "muddy lyrics", or unclear lyrics. - " "[Danny] slammed his hand onto a table with a great big "P-----SSSSS!", causing his neckbrace to fall off. At the same time, on the floor located just between the stage and its concrete seating, many items fell right out of Demoman's and Heavy's possessions."
-A common joke is to have Danny's "p-ss" shout (18+) make things fall, for instance, a calendar page.
-Demoman and Heavy share the same voice actor. - "[...]nor his silver-blue Fists of Steel gloves from falling out of his large body."
-Heavy's Fists of Steel were originally silver-blue on both teams before a shade of red, and later, a diluted bronze shade, was made for the RED team in February 2011. CODE RED is set on Jan. 2, 2011, so this is before the change.
- "Kagami's voice was electronically altered in a similar manner to GLaDOS's voice"
-Also a common joke, Kagami may have a voice clip altered with Melodyne to sound like GLaDOS. Admittedly, if Jack ever meets Kagami's voice actress, the GLaDOSification will stop.
-As of 2012, Kagami's voice actress is on Twitter, so several final GLaDOSification segments were made for inhibitor filler ep10. - " "Across the block with a smile on your mouth and your hand on your--" "Heart!" Ma-Ti interrupted while throwing a punch."
-Another muddy-lyrics issue with mondegreens in the song "LoveGame". - "Then she spoke... but it wasn't really her voice. "Please don't waste my time," the girl said. [...] "I don't like unnecessary fights." "
-Mio's English voice actress also voices Noel Vermillion in the BlazBlue games.
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Oct 25 2010 - "A rocket crashed into a green onion missile, destroying them both just above the city buildings."
-Soldier may have the Direct Hit rocket launcher at his disposal, being a sharpshooter rocket-user himself, but he doesn't use it in the missions. - "Then, Soldier fell from the sky in a rocket-jump landing. A sickening crunch was heard, but he was fine."
-He also doesn't use the Gunboats jump-boots he had won at the end of the December 2009 War, but manages to survive nonetheless. - "[Mio] was only part of the missions because, six months ago, Soldier had tracked her down and re-traumatized her with a claim of "Little miss, you have exposed your backside!" "
-Depicted in CODE RED Jun 8 2010. More info in chapter 16.
