In-jokes list part 5

(Chapters 15-17 and epilogue)
SPOILER WARNING.
Posted on Jan. 12, 2012. Regularly being updated; last update on Dec. 20, 2016.

Chapter 15: Pink messenger
  • " "I don't have much time here," [superslinger2007] said. "I've seen that even though the subject wears a headset all the time, she ends up using a separate microphone in her performances." "
-Media such as the "Kocchi Muite Baby" opening for Project Diva 2nd depicts Miku using a handheld microphone even though her headset has a mic.
  • "superslinger2007 continued to speak. "Unfortunately, I have to leave. All I can say now is that at least one of these two videos, where things were blatant and not accident, became so popular that they have been, and still will be, mirrored and shared numerous times." "
-Ever since 2007, the videos have been constantly mirrored and reuploaded numerous times despite its risky fanservice content.
-As of December 20, on YouTube:
The latest known upload of the first #SK09 video was noted as an upload on June 5, 2015 by "Jon Davis"
. An Osu video showing the bottom half of the video was uploaded by Sailor Star on August 31, 2016, and a Stepmania video was posted by Arren on May 28, 2016.
The latest known uploads of the second #SK09 video were noted as follows: an upload on Feb. 5, 2014 as an Osu video by silverth2211/"Nalter"
, and another on Sept. 11, 2014 by "Aisha kagamine" .
  • "[Luka] put her hands playfully in front of her head and raised her left leg. She yelped with a smile as she regained her balance with a hop."
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 5. This is a Luka cosplayer's random pose.
  • " "I have to choose 'Team Potter' because his name-- Aaah!" Rin yelped in a sudden realization: she was saying that line involuntarily all because someone at that convention went as her, blonde hair, white bow, and all!"
-This was an effect of the Bum Reviews episode about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.
  • "Suddenly, the teenage boy with blonde spiky hair jumped in front of Rin with his arms spread wide. How he came up with that pose was, again, anyone's guess"
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 4. When Jack tried to film a Mikuru cosplayer, both of them were videobombed by a female Len cosplayer. Jack was not sure that the cosplay character he was looking at was Len, though, while he left the camera running during their talk.
  • "Len winked his right eye while Rin winked her left eye again."
-These two counterparts had a connection to Miku.
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Dec 25 2010 - extended retcon ending
  • "It was the very laptop from Neru's apartment that Heavy saw when he and Scout defeated her five months ago."
-Depicted in CODE RED Jul 24 2010.
  • "Luka looked at Heavy and waved happily at him with her right hand. It was, once again, anyone's guess as to why someone like Luka would wave to a mercenary like that."
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 5. The aforementioned Luka cosplayer was also asked to wave at the camera, much like several other Luka cosplayers throughout both Payback seasons.
  • "In the distance, a man in a dark blue suit and a suitcase, known as the G-Man, shook his head. He had done the same thing when he saw Heavy punching a crate with his Fists of Steel a week earlier."
-Depicted in CODE RED Dec 25 2010.
  • " "But we'll win anyway, because we're the heroes." Luka said. However, the signal scramble caused her to speak in a voice that wasn't really hers."
-Luka's voice provider also voiced Lebreau in Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2.
  • " "I know that only my friend can really stop those missiles," Luka continued. "And someone here has been very close to her since that September two years ago." "
-A YouTube GMod video named "Haruhi Attacks the Spy" released on September 26, 2009 inspired this CODE RED subplot.
  • " "Good luck, you guys!" Luka cheered. She then winked. "So there's one mystery solved," noted Wheatley."
-Luka, of course, had a connection to Miku.

Chapter 16: The final test
  • " "Overtime! Overtime! Over-time!" GLaDOS announced."
-A reference to the TF2 King of the Hill bug which was eventually changed into a console setting.
  • "She looked to her left and giggled briefly in her regular computerized voice. It was anyone's guess as to why GLaDOS would do that besides being stuck in a human-like form for a prolonged period of time."
-Payback influence: day 2 part 2. Jack asked a GLaDOS-human cosplayer to speak the "For science, you monster" line from Portal 2. Once she finished, she giggled a bit.
  • " "It was a neighbourhood game!" yelled Scout in disappointment."
    -Scout and unkemptpubes "Clams" video.
  • " "Ding dong! Dinner's served! Come and get it!" "
    -Scout and church-guy.
  • "She moved her wrist up and down in front of "Gitah"'s strings and tilted her head to her left and to her right along with alternating beats, all while smiling. Why Yui would even pretend to strum along using that random action pose was anyone's guess."
-Payback influence: day 2 part 2. Jack had met the Yui cosplayer a day before as well and asked her to pretend to strum on her Gitah prop.
  • "Ritsu seemed to be having more fun. In an overly energetic manner, she pretended to play a drumset in front of her while standing. [...] It was also anyone's guess as to why Ritsu would also pretend to play along to this rock song."
-Ritsu's English voice actress appeared on a Crunchyroll live web stream during Anime Expo 2011, and played air drums on the live broadcast among three other staff members, including Mio's English voice actress. A recording may be found here.
  • "Mio looked down at Wheatley and nodded. She then found herself... waving at him. Again, it was anyone's guess as to why."
-Payback influence: day 1. A different Mio cosplayer was asked to wave at the camera.
  • "Rin quickly acted on instinct and also threw a finger-gun gesture toward the remaining missile. "Poof!" she yelled."
-Rin's actions regarding the Bum Reviews clip that Pyro found (again, of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1).
  • " "Ahem. Mentlegen," Spy said with a chuckle."
-Another popular Spy catchphrase; a corruption of the "Gentlemen" line.
  • "The road roller was being driven by Len, her counterpart, but Rin continued to stand on it without falling off."
-There is a picture video which was reposted onto YouTube where chibified (super-deformed) versions of Rin and Len are shown doing this. The song title literally means "It's my road roller!".
  • " "I just get Huey Lewis tape," Heavy told BRS and Mugi. "He keeps spirits up on battlefield." "
-Heavy speaks this line from Poker Night at the Inventory, but plays "Back in Time" from Back to the Future on the boombox.
  • "Rena gasped silently at her own statement. Suddenly, she smiled and waved with her left hand and blinked three times. However, it was anyone's guess as to why Rena waved when there was no one else on the grounds...."
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 3. A Rena cosplayer is asked to wave at the camera "before anything else happens".
  • Soldier pulls the same shovel trick that he did in front of Mio as in CODE RED Jun 8 2010. It shows that an alleged psychopath named Shion as well as Mio herself exposed their backsides just as Miku had done in the #SK09 videos.
-Shion - "Ura Higu" short, number 13, where the characters are inexplicably outside during a windy day.
-Mio - the infamous K-On! episode, season 1, episode 6.
  • However, this backfires, as Mio pulls a "Moe Moe Kyun" blast, as depicted in K-On! season 1 episode 4, and knocks out Soldier, who cannot stand cuteness.
  • "A man with short black hair and red sunglasses appeared."
-Jack himself appears, wearing the sunglasses he wore in Payback: the Otafest vlogs and other onscreen appearances before May 2013.
-Since CODE RED concludes its setting on Jan. 2, 2011, it would be 17 months until June 2012, when Jack shattered his sunglasses in its left lens due to people having "something against me".
  • "[Haku] smiled as best as she could with her droopy eyebrows, and waved with her right hand at Scout. It was once again anyone's guess as to why a lonely person like the silver-haired woman would wave like that."
-Payback influence: day 3 part 2. A Haku cosplayer is asked to wave at the camera.
  • "Just then, Teto excitedly ran over to Neru and caught her off guard in a sudden hug."
-Teto was also part of Miku and Neru's "Triple Baka" group.

Chapter 17: Subject revealed
  • "[GLaDOS] then declared with a stern expression on her face, "Three-nine-three-nine will pay the price!" "
-Depicted in CODE RED Aug 31 2010
-"Three-nine-three-nine", or 3939, represents an alternate Japanese pronunciation for "Miku Miku". Concerts have been held on March 9 in reference to this Japanese pun, which can also mean "thank you".
  • "Sniper looked at Demoman angrily. "Gotcha, you bomb-lobbing wanker!" he yelled. Sniper believed that Demoman had tried to make the green-haired girl, who just flew out of the building, do that taunt inappropriately."
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Aug 31 2010.
  • "Nice to meet you, I'm Meru Otonashi," read... the green-haired girl herself!"
-As depicted in (Zoku) Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, episode 13: Miku unbelievably makes a cameo appearance at Meru's role audition.
  • "Neru's fake voice was heard saying, "This will seem very important to you: 'Bizarre Jelly 5', at the two-minute mark!" "
-The "Bizarre Jelly 5" BGM in No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle, unbelievably, has Miku performing vocals at the 2-minute mark.
-A Travis Touchdown cosplayer was featured in day 2 part 2 of Payback: the Otafest vlogs because Medic and Travis share the same voice actor.
  • " "Listen to my extremely scientific findings!" Strong Sad announced."
-The distortion sounds throughout the series since the May 2010 "update" contained Emancipation Grill sounds overlaid with slowed down segments of Miku songs. This is similar to the slowed down sounds in the Strong Bad Email named "unnatural", where Strong Sad proceeds to speed up his recordings.
  • " "All right, power geeks!" Haruhi shouted in a voice that wasn't really hers. "I'm tired of fooling around! Now feel my sting!" "
    -Depicted in: May 2010 "update"
-Haruhi and Scorpina (from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) share the same voice actress.
  • "It showed a black-haired girl swinging a green onion in her right hand up and down while grooving in front of a multicolor diamond background"
-Isabella is seen shaking a green onion in Phineas and Ferb: Summer Belongs To You, in an homage to Miku's "Ievan Polkka" video.
  • "a cartoonish caricature of an orange-haired girl spinning a green onion in her right hand"
-A scene in Bleach episode 2 led to Orihime's status as the "Loituma Girl" and spawned the aforementioned "Ievan Polkka" video.
  • "Heavy screamed upon realizing that this girl, Orihime, had unwittingly inspired the very thing the #SK09-HM10-07XX case file subject needed for a popularity boost! [...] Just then, Yui and Akira heard Heavy's scream. They gasped and looked over at the same time at where the scream came from."
" "Huh?! No no no no no no no no!" the girl yelped in a high-pitched voice. She shook her head furiously with her closed hands on her chest."
-Yui, Akira, Orihime, and Mikuru all share the same voice actress.
  • "She made a peace-sign gesture with her right hand, and smiled. A few seconds later, she waved with the same hand. It was anyone's guess as to why Mikuru would do these random poses."
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 4. After the videobomb, the Mikuru cosplayer performed these random poses.
  • " "Do svidaniya!" Heavy called, using a Russian phrase for "goodbye". Mikuru jumped. "Wah!" She then stammered, "H-h-how did you know that?!" It was, again, anyone's guess as to how someone like Mikuru would know of a phrase like that."
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 5. In the final "desperate closure" segment, after Jack told the bent-Len, Mikuru, and maid cosplayers to wave at the camera and say goodbye, the Mikuru cosplayer tried to sneak in a "do svidaniya".
  • " "And I thought for sure that the boy who ordered many keyboards appreciated that case file subject," said the persona. "His behaviour even rubbed off on her once." "
-Depicted in CODE RED Aug 31 2010
-There is a video (re-posted on YouTube) where Miku acts exactly like the Angry German Kid.
  • "Heavy recognized [Sniper's voice] from that time he and Sniper were at the inhibitors, and he also recognized his own laugh."
-Depicted in the May 2010 "update".
  • "In the split-second the costume appeared on screen, Heavy remembered that GLaDOS had changed Kagami into this very costume over two months ago, but he still had no idea whose outfit this was supposed to be."
-Kagami was briefly given the costume of Rin Tohsaka from Fate/stay night, who may also be classified as a "tsundere" character.
-Previously featured in: CODE RED Oct 25 2010
  • GLaDOS changes Kagami into her "Kagamiku" costume just like Konata did in the Lucky Star OVA (it was all over the promos). This traumatizes Kagami, as it is the incriminating manifestation that gives her a connection to Miku (and was also why both Kagami and Konata winked).
  • "Yuki was still reading her Force Unleashed II hardcover novel"
-Payback influence: day 3 part 1. See chapter 10.
  • "Yoko performed her random peek-a-boo gesture once more with her hands beside her head"
-Payback influence: day 2 part 1. See chapter 9.
  • "Azusa's mouth flew wide open as a blush appeared across her face and a tiny spurt of blood gushed out of her nose."
-In the K-On! manga, Azusa gets a nosebleed after seeing a recording of Mio's exposed backside incident. Nosebleeds are a visual way of expressing arousal in anime/manga.
  • "Tsukasa and her entourage continued their walk. Little did they know that another girl with long, light blonde hair and what seemed like mechanical pink and white triangular ears was following close by."
-Tsukasa Hiiragi, Yuki Nagato, Yoko Littner, Minami Iwasaki, Cream the Rabbit*, and Chii all share the same voice actress.

*As of Sonic Free Riders (2010) and Sonic Generations (2011)

  • "The blonde-haired girl with triangular ears stepped into his place and pointed in the same direction. "Underpants," she said softly."
-One episode of Chobits has Chii stating this infamous line.
-In CODE RED Jun 8 2010, in a Disturbance Over A Leak-style clip, superslinger2007 (persona) is depicted with Chii walking beside him while saying this repeatedly.
  • "Konata seemed to remember having a "doujinshi" disc, or fan-made self-published disc, that she bought at a comic market festival."
-As implied in Lucky Star episodes 4, 12, and 21, Konata regularly goes to Comiket, a convention in Japan. Some people made connections between the booths that Konata went to and the booths that actually were there. Of course, Konata went for the risky stuff, so why wouldn't the #SK09 videos count toward it? (The #SK09 videos are tame compared to the stuff that Shizuku-gumi blogged about on their website before it moved. As of May 2013, their blog contents are down.)
-The two risky #SK09 videos have been distributed as a set during Comiket 73 in late December 2007, a few days before the second #SK09 video was slightly modified and then posted online.
  • The actions performed by Miku across chapter 17 closely follow the events of the infamous first #SK09 video for the song "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru", part of the aforementioned set, named Atomic Glide.
-Because Miku was depicted as having uncanny abilities such as flight and using her ponytails as extra limbs in the #SK09 case file, Rin, Len, and Luka, the allies who were closest to Miku, were also given uncanny abilities of their own, likely subconsciously by superslinger2007 (persona).
  • "In a higher-pitched voice that wasn't really hers, Azusa noted, "She's... tripping over herself." "
-Azusa's voice actress also portrayed Mint Clark.
  • "In a swift motion, the girl swung her right foot around to her right, and kicked her left foot backward. Then she placed her right foot sideways where her left had been, and stomped her left foot in front of it."
-Miku performs a step featured at the end of the long version of the Project Diva 2nd "Kocchi Muite Baby" opening.
  • "As the rock song ended, the girl winked, just as her allies had done over the past year."
-Finally, the idea of Miku (and her allies and others with connections to her) winking at the camera stems from one of the animated picture-scripts for an animetheme.com/sidebar Vista/Win7 gadget named "System Animator".
  • "[Sniper] had befriended her on September 23, 2009."
-This was "Haruhi Attacks the Spy"'s release date.
  • There are 17 chapters (excluding the prologue and epilogue) because 17 is a recurring number throughout the superslinger2007 series.

Epilogue: Another innocence
  • "Yui shook her head and showed Pyro a different pose: she leaned to her side and used her index fingers and thumbs to form a camera frame."
-One of Pyro's "Director's vision" taunts closely follows Yui's pose in her K-On!! (season 2) character image song single cover.
  • "As Chii waved at the group (though it was anyone's guess as to why she waved)"
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 3. A Chii cosplayer was asked to wave at the camera. In an unreleased season 2 episode, another Chii cosplayer was encountered.
  • "Finally, in a dark room in an abandoned lab inside Aperture, Spy pulled a lever on a machine."
-This is meant to be the room in the mod Portal: Prelude where the player grabs the morality core.
  • " "No one will ever want to marry me now," [Mio] moaned to herself, after finding out that Miku's situation was very similar to her own."
-Such was the consequence of finding a parallel and being forced to remember the aftermath of her "Fuwa Fuwa Time" performance (K-On! season 1 episode 6)
  • "Miku hovered above the stage. She huddled her body and placed her head and her bent legs to her chest briefly, then spread herself outward."
-Miku does a pose toward a riskily-angled camera as featured in the second #SK09 video, "My Time". Again, she is in midair, showing her uncanny ability to fly.
  • "Miku placed the cake just inside the stage building entrance, and picked up the touchscreen instrument once more. Miku then ran beside Sniper and played a sequence of beeps, causing some orchestration to play from the stage. Then, she began to sing a song in Japanese."
-The song is called "Innocence" and it is by Kazu-P. The video for it features the touchscreen instrument with the triangular grip.
-The epilogue is named after this song.
  • "[Heavy] remembered the first time he saw Miku perform a song before Soldier fell to his cruel misdeeds."
-This is covered in a YouTube GMod video named "Heavy Loves Miku Hatsune", which was actually released after "Haruhi Attacks the Spy".
  • "He saw Wheatley... attached to the head of a man with blue hair."
-The man Wheatley is attached to is named Kaito, and neither of them are happy about Sniper and Miku getting together.
  • "Suddenly, Len jumped in front of Rin again with his arms spread wide. It was anyone's guess as to why Len would do that move again."
-Payback influence: the 4th split day - part 4. See chapter 15.
  • "Cul shrugged her shoulders in resignation, then slammed the area in front of her with her right arm. Shards of broken glass spontaneously appeared in midair beside Wheatley, who dodged them."
-The video for "Cul Makes Revolution" begins with Cul spontaneously smashing a glass "wall" with her fists in three different ways.
-It seems this is Cul's uncanny ability of her own, despite her being a relative newcomer and aspiring performer.
  • "It was anyone's guess as to why Miku would wave randomly at Wheatley, but she had made her cue."
    -Payback
influence: Throughout both seasons of the series, several Miku cosplayers were asked to wave at the camera.
  • " "My priority is to get you where you need to be. But after the mission's complete, you'll have to decide the next step on your own." "
Now that CODE RED is complete, a new story is set to begin. Mikuru and three Combine soldiers, now acting as time police, now aim to get the Portal 2 cores back to their own timelines. However, this investigation led to further complications along the way.... (One Step Beyond: YTP ss07 11)
  • "[Engineer] remembered that Miku, that lucky green-haired girl herself, had a concert coming up in six months."
-A concert was held on July 2, 2011 named Mikunopolis, six months after CODE RED's setting on Jan. 2. It was preceded by several commercials covered in a mini-series now known as "The comments on Miku", formerly "The comments on [redacted]".
